Water Authority customers may use a check-box on their bill to contribute to “The Living Riving Fund,” a program aimed at conserving the Rio Grande’s ecosystem. The fund will be used to purchase water rights so that water can be kept in the river, maintaining flows for plants and wildlife (including the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow) that depend on the Rio Grande for survival.
The check-box has appeared on Water Authority bills since 2008; it allows water customers to add $1 to their payment total and designate it for donation to the Fund. Program partners in the Living River Fund include Defenders of Wildlife, Wild Earth Guardians, the National Audubon Society, the New Mexico Audubon Society, the Sierra Club and the Southwest Environmental center.
Besides the Living River Fund, The Water Authority also contributes to a breeding program for the Rio Grande silvery minnow and is involved in habitat restoration efforts on the Rio Grande.
